I can't get rid of the Login screen...

I unchecked "Use the Welcome Screen" under Control Panel/ User Accounts/
Select Logon and Logoff Options. This problem only arose after I installed
the software for my new HP Officejet 5610. I can ignore the password
requirement and just hit Enter and I'm logged on but I'd rather not see the
Welcome screen at all. Also my logoff screen has changed; suddenly I receive
the window with a drop-down list to select "shut down", "restart" and
"standby". Previously those choices were displayed horizontally.

I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Disabling the Welcome Screen will not fix your problem. All
that does is change the dialog you see displayed when you start
up or shut down your computer. That's why you're seeing the
Windows 2000 style shutdown dialog.

When you installed your HP printer, did you see a notice about
having to install Microsoft's .NET Framework 1.1? You can check
by going into Control Panel and opening Add or Remove Programs.
If you see it listed, take a look at these articles:

The Welcome to Windows screen appears when you start Windows XP
after you install the .NET Framework 1.1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885055/

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en

If it turns out that .NET Framework 1.1 is not the source of
your problem, do the following:

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In the "Users for this computer" box, click on the account you
want to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck
