I can't get Outlook 2003 to accept a task.

My employees have been unable to accept my tasks.

They are getting the following errors,
---------------------
When I open the e-mail it says;

“This item cannot be displayed in the reading Pane. Open the item to read
its contents.â€

When I open the task it says;

“ Can’t open this item. The property does not exist. The field you want to
modify is not valid for this type of item.â€

My EU had a slightly different scenario.

He couldn't add attachment onto his email in OL2003 in windows xp pro
sp2

I solved the issue by re-adjusting Internet security setting to be MS
default instead of Custom. That fixed the issue. I don't know if this
will help Tasks like items.

Uninstalling the previous update (KB892843) worked for me as well, and (if I
haven't missed something) I have heard nothing out of Redmond about this.

Now there's another update that must contain some of the last one
(KB913807), because the same symptoms reoccurred -- an inability to open,
accept, or decline a Task Request.

Does anyone have any more info at all?

I finally bit the bullett and rang microsoft about this. Much discussion with
Tech Support (at no cost to me as they seemed to accept it wasn't a user
problem) reveled two items of note:

1. MS had no idea this problem existed as it appeared no-one had reported
it. They are now aware of the problem and I told them to referr to these
discussion groups if they didnt believe me or thought I was the only person
with this problem.

2. The tech I spoke to did acknowledge it was a serious problem and
undertook to send the reference up the line for the developers to look at.

They did not reccommend uninstalling any security updates. This would leave
systems vulnerable and it appears from the lates posts that more recent
updates may also be causing problems (is this latest one a cumilative
update?).

I would urge erveryone with this problem to contact MS tech support ASAP and
notify them of this problem. At the time I called they had not heard of this
issue at all (I can't believ that there is no-one in MS that monitors the
groups for this sort of thing). Until they realise how big and widespread the
problem is, I doubt they will give it the attention it requires.

I have the same problem than you, I don't have the KB892843 installed and
same 'weird behavior' of tasks, I can't see the preview pane, the accept or
decline buttons, but nothing happens when I click on them, and if I try
replying, it goes to myself

Hi - just read your post having just uninstalled the latest update, KB913807
and found that my tasks work again - I'm sure I got the original solution
(uninstalling KB892843) from another thread in this discussion that was
posted from someone in tech support in Microsoft.......so they must be aware
of it? I can't believe that they've done absolutely nothing about it in the
several months that it's been a problem - and then gone on to release another
update that causes the same problem. It smacks of absolute and total
incompetence to me. I was about to take your advice and report the problem
myself in the hope that they would then get off their backsides and do
something about it, but was amazed to find out that Microsoft actually charge
you to report a fault in their product!!! I would call, but unfortunately,
don't have the time to sit on the other end of the phone for hours waiting
for someone to answer it as I've already wasted a load of time uninstalling
and rebooting just so I'm able to accept tasks as they come through to me.
Perhaps Microsoft rely on the fact that people are too busy to dance around
their houses to report their problems to enable them to carry on with shoddy
service and products? (whilst still coining in all of our money) Perhaps I'm
being a little strong here, but I am rather irritated that this has happened
again, and yet again, I've had considerable amounts of my time wasted due to
incompetence at Microsoft.

I removed the KB892843 and the problem was fixed. After that, i installed the
new KB913807 and I have the same problem again

I could not find hotfix KB899340.

NOTE: I have the problem that the assigned tasks I receive will not open but
I can not assign a task either (the task window shows the task form but the
assign button is off)

Can someone who has downloaded this hotfix please upload it to a website so
we can downlad it? Microsoft has us jumping through hoops to get at this
hotfix. It should be made readily available to all of their Office 2003
users. I'm not sure about the legality about this request, but it's
Microsoft's crime for not providing this hotfix to the public - jerks.
Thanks to anyone who does this in advance.

All you have to do is to call them, ask for the hotfix, and ask for nothing
else. Why is this so hard for you? I had to request a hotfix just last
week and it took about 3 minutes.

Reposting Microsoft products and hotfixes is a violation and I am surprised
that you would actually ask someone to do it in a Microsoft sponsored news
group. Ask anyone here who has had to apply for a hotfix (I have had 4 over
the years) and everyone will tell you that it is a simple matter and takes
no more than 5 minutes to get.

Yes it was a stupid request that was not thought through. I was reluctant to
go through the steps because of all the warnings about possible applicable
support costs. I just don't see why we can't click a download link off the
KB article, like other hotfixes I've downloaded in the past. I still say MS
are jerks for not providing an easy download method for this hotfix, and for
not fully addressing this problem for such an important feature.

Hotfixes are untested (regression testing, etc.) and are provided as a
stop-gap until a proven fix is available. Making them available for
download willy-nilly is just stupid as the general public will, most likely,
download something THEY think will help and will completely hose their
computers.

When you call and ask for the hotfix, the Support Engineer verifies that the
hotfix will work for your specific situation and will provide the link.
Removing that verification step does no one any good.

I called MSFT at 1-800-642-7676. Told them that I needed the hotfix
KB899340 they transfered me to professional support, and 1 minute
later they had emailed me the link to get the file.

VERY simple. Very fast, Very Free! My total call time was less than 4
minutes (including the time to get through the menus.)

Enjoy.

It's always been that efficient for me, too. The key, as you found, is to have the KB article number in hand when you call.
