I can't get Outlook 2003 to accept a task.

I was accepting tasks until last week, following an update. Now, I can not
accept a task assigned to me. I can open other email messages, but not a
task, it will not open, will not allow me to accept it, and it will not get
placed on my task list. Any suggestions? I tried a repair, and a reinstal.

What happens when you receive a task request? Does the message look like a
task at all?

I have the same problem , any body can help?

I have the same problem. I see the Accept and Decline buttons but they do
not work. I am wondering if it's because the people sending the Tasks have
not done the update?

It looks normal, with all the buttons, but when I try to open the task,
nothing happens. When I click on the accept button, it clicks, but nothing
happens. My co-worker has the same problem, it occurred at the same time.

I was having the same problem for a few days and based on kfluharty's
message, I thought maybe it was related to a recent Microsoft update.
I did a "system restore" to just before the Microsoft update I
performed on January 10th, 2006 and bingo - my tasks now work! I'm not
sure what to do now though. It seems like I've opened a hole in the
security by unistalling an update???

I suspected this also. I tried System Restore, and my computer would not
restore to any date I tried, so I am still stuck with not being able to open
tasks.

I have fixed the problem by removing both update from office update I
received on 1/12/06. Both were security updates.

Thanks, for the tips but the removal of those security updates (KB892843) did
not work for me. Any other suggestions?

There were actually two updates that day, I removed both, but we only removed
the one on another machine. We also found that if you had already received a
task, then removed the updates, the tasks received still did not work. But
when I received a new task, (with the update removed) it worked fine.

I am having the same problem here too ... Any word on when Microsoft may be
fixing this issue so we dont have to roll out of these security updates? I
can't seem to find any commentary on this directly from them anywhere.

Thanks for your tips.
I was able to respond on new tast assignments. Now we have to wait for
Microsoft to solve the security update issue.

I have had this 'unanticipated feature' show up on half the PCs in our
office.

All machines that are running Outlook 2003 with either SP1 or SP2
installed, and then received & installed the 06Jan12 Outlook and
Exchange critical security update (Microsoft Security Bulletin
MS06-003; KB892843) were unable to open assigned tasks in their inbox.

We don't have any PCs running Outlook 2003 pre-SP1, or earlier
editions of Outlook, so I don't know if KB892843 impacts opening
assigned tasks in these older versions of Outlook.

The PCs running Outlook 2003 with SP1 or SP2, but hadn't yet installed
KB892843 were also not affected.

Removing KB892843 from the affected machines & rebooting allowed users
to open newly assigned tasks in their inbox as normal, but they still
can't open the assigned tasks that were already received while KB892843
was installed. These tasks will have to be deleted by the receivers,
and recreated & re-sent by their senders.

All machines are running either Win2000 or WinXP Pro with up-to-date SP
and security patches. The effects of KB892843 weren't specific to
Win2000 or WinXP machines -- just any PCs running Outlook 2003 with
either SP1 or SP2 installed, and with KB892843 installed.

It looks like we'll have to stop auto-installing Windows / Microsoft
updates that come in overnight until MS fixes this 'D-OH!'

I am in the same vote as you. Was able to open (Accept) Tasks but not now. I
think all these problems started after the last MS update. Maybe MS will
come out with a patch.

We've had the same issue and finally called Tech Support. I didn't realize
that KB892843 installed more than once and when we removed the multiple
iterations, everything worked again (although it did not fix the previously
unopened tasks and we had to recreate those).
Per Tech Support, SP3 will fix the problem but won't be available for a
month or more.
If anyone has their computer set to automatically update, remember to
"uncheck" KB892843.
In this case, the Knowledge Base was not help at all. I don't often think to
check the Discussion Boards for solutions, but all of your comments were a
great help. Thanks to all!!!

SMA,

I just went and uninstalled KB892843 and the task Accept/Decline is now
working. Of course all past tasks that where sent do not work. But at least
all new ones work.

Thanks for posting this update.

Is there any way of contacting MS and asking them to sort this out? I too
have been affected by this issue and have only just been able to track down
this thread. Perhaps an MVP could raise the issue or give us some kind of
status update or something? It seems like the security patch was a very
serious one, so I'm not willing to uninstall it and open myself up to
vulnerabilities (was hit by the WMF vulnerability over Christmas and spend 12
hours trying to put XP back together after that...).

Any official answers?

Unfortunately, I don't have KB892843 installed, but I am having this problem,
I can't properly open task requests that are sent to me, nor can I
accept/decline them. I can preview the task request (the accept and decline
buttons are available in the preview), but I can't actually open it.
Clicking on accept or decline does nothing.

One thing I've noticed, that no one has mentioned, is that in the preview
the task request appears to have come from me. However, in the inbox the
correct sender is displayed. If I reply to the task request, the reply email
is addressed to me. Weird.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Duane

I too am having the problem on a bunch of machines. Has anyone notified
Microsoft? Just curious to find out if they are working on the problem.
