I cannot retrieve messages from my internet Exporer Inbox . Why?

I currenrly have a number of messages in my Inbox . When I attempt to
retrieve these nothing happens . This is only a new problem . how can I
rectify the problem?
 
What version of Outlook do you have? Do you get error messages when you try
to download them?
