I cannot open IE, only MSN browser?

I have Hi-speed cable, MS XP, but when I open IE, it says unable to detect
server. I go to internet connections, select the "always detect" box, etc.,
but it still won't connect. However, when I open up MSN, everything is fine.
Why won't IE work on its own? Does this make sense?
