I cannot modify a linked table in access (linked to excel).

I have linked a table in access to a worksheet in excel. When I open the
table, I cannot change any data - I get a message in field properties in
table design saying 'this property cannot be modified in linked tables'....
this is on my home pc, I can do it on my pc at work!! Does anyone know how to
fix this? Thanks!

Your home PC has an update installed that your work PC doesn't yet have.
Office 2003 SP-2 and the KB904018 update for Office XP both cripple this
feature in Access. Please see the following Web page:

The only way to fix it is to uninstall Office, then reinstall it without
installing Office 2003 SP-2 if you're using Access 2003, or without
installing the KB904018 update for Office XP if you're using Access 2002.
And you're only legally allowed to do this if you originally installed your
version of Office or Access before Microsoft lost the lawsuit that requires
them to cripple this feature in their software.

You don't say which version of Office, but these updates disabled the
ability to update linked EXCEL spreadsheets when you use ACCESS 2002 or
ACCESS 2003:

Office XP
KB904018, dated October 18, 2005. See

This feature has been disabled for legal reasons. Microsoft's own words:
"Because of legal issues, Microsoft has disabled the functionality in Access
2003 and in Access 2002 that let users change the data in linked tables that
point to a range in an Excel workbook." Microsoft lost a legal case
involving a person who claimed a patent on the feature.

These changes did not affect ACCESS 2000 or ACCESS 97.

That is, A97 and A2K are out of support, so no service pack has
been issued. A97 replacement CD's were already not available, and
presumably A2K replacement CD's are not available now. The
patch replaces the Excel IISAM with a reference to an Access DLL,
so presumably any A2K installed on the same PC as A2K2/A2K3
would be affected.
