I Cannot install a Fax Printer

Guest

I somehow lost my local fax printer. When I go to the control panel and
select Install a Local Fax Printer nothing happens. There is no longer an
icon for the fax printer. Do you know anything I can do to get the printer
back?
Thank You

I went to command prompt and typed in net start spoole. I recieved the
answer For help go to NET HELPMSG 2182. It said that I was trying to start a
program that was already started and to type NET START and it would show all
the programs running. The print spooler was listed. I checked the control
panel and still have no fax printer.
Thank You

Try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Control Panel, Printers & Faxes,
Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the fax several times. There is still no
fax printer icon in the control panel under printers & faxes. The fax
console continues to state No Fax Printer Installed.
Thank You

This problem appears to occur because the security data base is corrupted as
documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

Note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the Esentutl.exe utility
and would prefer you try the hotfix.
