I cannot find a setup error code in the KB (error code is 4)

Ed Becker

When I try to reinstall Win2k Pro on my hard drive, I get
an error message:
"Missing file \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe. The error code is 4."

The closest the KB comes to this is "...\i386
\ntkrnlmp.exe. The error code is 7."

Recommendations for this code don't seem to help.

Hi Ed,

I performed a search on your error and found that 95% of the issues that
document your exact error were resolved by replacing the RAM or rearranging
the RAM modules. I also performed a Google search and found listings that
state this error can occur if the L1 Cache on the Motherboard is damaged.
Almost all the posts I found refer to a hardware problem as being the root
cause for this error. You have a couple of options, you can take the
computer to a local vendor and have them test the Motherboard and RAM or you
can simply rearrange your RAM modules in the PC and test before contacting a
vendor. If you do not feel comfortable rearranging the RAM chips I
recommend you take the PC to a local vendor for assistance. The only other
entries I found that refer to this error mentioned the Hard Disk being setup
using a EISA Configuration utility.

Good Luck,

Matt Hendrix, [MSFT]
