I am using IE 6 and for some reason when I try to
download anything it wont work. What could be the problem?

Exactly what happens when you try?
What particular file types?

....Alan

I have tried to download, spy ware removal software, Anti
Viral Software, etc.... none of them will work, they all
get to the point of starting then stop. I can browse the
internet just fine. Any suggestions?

I also have had this problem for about a month. The file download utility gives the message : cannot download xxxx from xxx.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open the internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found
Please try again later

Other downloads where the option to 'save' or 'open' always work. What can the problem be. More importantly what can be done to fix this ?

Downloads may be treated differently for different file types.
What file types? (.exe, .zip etc.)

Please explain what you mean by getting to the point of starting.
Do you mean the start of the download?
Please supply a bit more information as to exactly what you see.

Whenever I go to a site and click on download, it goes to
the page and at the bottom I have the status bar letting
me know what is happening. All of a sudden on each of the
sites after I have clicked on download it starts going to
the page where I can download and IF i make it that far
to that page which mostly I do, I click on the link to
download the particular file, the browser starts going to
that page, then it says done at the bottom and nothing
ever happens. It just stops. I see only the small
triangle cirlce square mulit colors in the far upper left
hand corner of the page. (this same thing is usually what
you see when you try to download a page and a pic does
not load. I cannot download anything. HELP!

OK. You are not keen on answering the file type question for some
reason but the three-colored icon top left is a classic symptom of one
or two file types only and this is my standard response:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

the file types are anti virus software and anti spy ware
software that i am trying to download. Norton, Mcafee,
Lavasoft. those are to name a few.
