Hi,

I am currently using outlook 2000. I can receive email but not sending
email. The error message is that outlook cannot connect to the outgoing
(SMTP) server. I've checked to make sure the smtp server is correct.
I doubt it's because of the firewall that is installed in the computer which
connects to the internet. will that be the case? but how come I can receive
email then?

Can you PING the SMTP server from your machine (type in PING <SMTP server
name> in a command prompt window)? If so, try temporarily turning off the
firewall to see if things work. It could be that port 110 is open for
receiving mail but port 25 isn't open for sending mail.

yes, I can ping my smtp server.
I've tried to turn off the firewall, but still doesn't work.
however, the my hotmail works, why? is that because hotmail using http sever
instead of smtp or pop3 ?

Yes.

What the full error message you receive when trying to connect?

In outlook express, I got the following error message:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.tpg.com.au', Server:
'mail.tpg.com.au', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

In MS outlook, I got the following error message:
Sending and receiving reported error (0x80042109); Outlook is unable to
connect to your outgoing (smtp) server. If you continue to receive this
message, contact your ISP.

Any idea? Thanks

I just tried to connect to mail.tpg.com.au over port 25 and it failed. The
server exists, though, since I was able to PING it. Maybe the SMTP service
isn't running. I checked their site and the server name you've got seems
right. Are you still connecting via their network?

Yes, I am using mail.tpg.com.au at work, and it works fine. But when I try
to connect to it at home, it just doesn't work, strange...

actually, I don't know how to turn it off, I just turn off the whole Mcafee
program, but still not working...

Probably because at work you're on their network but at home you're not.
What ISP are you using at home? You'd probably have to use their SMTP server
while at home

It's strange, it only works for few emails but no all.
Such as I sending to my own email address, or send to email address in
optusnet.com.au (because my outgoing SMTP server is mail.optusnet.com.au)
But it doesn't work for others, like hotmail, yahoo etc.
Why so?

But this time is a bit different, there's no error message, and the message
has been put inside the sent folder, which seems like it's been sent.
However, there's nothing come up in my other email account...
