I can receive email but I can't send!

Like all the others on this thread. My Windows Mail has been working fine
sending and receiving mail and a couple days ago it has stopped sending mail
(still receives). None of my settings have changed and I have verified with
my ISP. This is a Microsoft issue.
Does anyone have a fix?

You haven't given us much to go on. What happens to the message
you tried to send, does it stay in the Outbox?
Do you get an error message when you try to send? If so, right-click
on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without that complete error message.

Which antivirus are you using?

I'm having the same problem. Here's the message I keep getting:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Re: Sam & Friends', Account:

Charter indicates you are connecting from a Verizon connection.
Charter will not allow you to use their SMTP server unless you are
connected via Charter.

Are you sending from a laptop while away from home?
The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Switch to a different ISP or complain to Charter. Cable companies are
very bad about accommodating travelers.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute the
SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you want
to go that route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

T

tman72

There is no error message. When you hit the send receive button, it goes
through the normal process of authenticating, connecting (which it indicates
connected) and then disconnecting and does not send out any mail.

We did not have an antivirus program when the problem occurred. Last night I
installed Norton thinking it was a virus. This did not help and the issue
remains.

What happens a message you try to send, does it stay in the
Outbox, or does it go into the Sent Items folder?
If there is an accumulation of messages in the Outbox folder, open
the Outbox folder. Move as many of those messages as you can to
the Drafts folder. If any won't move or can't be deleted,
apply this Microsoft fix:

yes I just started having problems, also, this is what I get. yes mine does
stay in the outbox as not sent. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the
connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network
problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'Re: Sam's e-mail',

That type of problem is often caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly intrusive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

When you hit send, the message moves into the outbox. It never moves into
the sent email because it does not send.

I physically moved all the messages into the draft folder without a problem.

I am using windows one care for my antivirus. I am trying to send via windows

one care since february & just recently started getting this message

ok i thought i was using windows live mail i know it's not outlook. so what
is the difference between the2 & how do i get to windows live mail. all i
know when i got vista this is what my sister said to use thought it was
windows live mail, obviously not aware there are 2 windows mail

Windows Live Mail does everything that Windows Mail does, plus
a few extras. I recommend you give it a try. It will automatically import
all your accounts, settings, and emails from your Windows Mail.
The download link is on this page: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Beginning yesterday (9/20/2008), my Windows Mail began giving the following
error every time I try to send email:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'test', Account: 'Ted Toal', Server:
'smtp.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0F

All email account settings are correct. This fact was verified three
separate times with AT&T(Yahoo/SBC) techs, one of whom remoted in and
checked. He set up an email acct on a separate PC using same settings, and
was able to send email. The problem lies at my end, but to my knowledge I
have changed nothing.

There is one more important tidbit of info: I changed my email acct password
a week ago, and after changing it, this error began happening SPORADICALLY.
Only yesterday did it begin happening 100% of the time. I cannot send
email. It happens IMMEDIATELY upon pressing Send/Recv. It is as if
something locally at my computer is stopping the transaction on port 465; I
doubt if anything is being sent at all to the server.

Ted Toal

T

Additional info:

- turning off the Windows Firewall makes no difference.
- I am not using any anti-virus program other than Windows Defender.
- Some sort of Windows Defender update installed yesterday.

Also: I deleted and recreated the email acct within Windows Mail. This made
no difference.

This did not help. I went through all this & still get this error. I have
never had this problem until just a few days ago. what is happening
