I have a pc running XP home that would not connect to the internet via modem
(would connect to isp but could not surf the internet). I then connected it
to my lan wich has an adsl connection through a router -still no luck. I can
ping the gateway and dns server but can not ping www.microsoft.com. To config
my router i use a html link (eg. http://192.168.0.200/admin) but that will
not work on this pc. The network is woking as i installes sp2 to see if this
would fix the error. I have run msconfig to disable all non microsoft
services to see if the helps but no luck.

If i open a web site like www.cnn.com it says can not open search page.

Please help

Pinging www.microsoft.com doesn't tell you anything, since that site
doesn't reply to pings. Try these:

http://216.239.39.99
http://google.com

If the first succeeds and the second fails, there's a problem with DNS
resolution on your computer. If both fail, try pinging the computer's
default gateway address. If that fails, the problem could be caused
by TCP/IP stack corruption. In that case, try these fixes:

Original or SP1 - Follow the steps given here:

How to determine and recover from Winsock2 corruption
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

SP2 - enter this line at the command prompt:

netsh winsock reset catalog.
