I can only send email by replying to a received email (Outlook 20.

I cannot send email in Outlook 2003. I can reply to received mail with no
trouble. I can receive with no trouble. Anything I try to send, remains in
the out box. The only error message I receive is as follows: Personal
folders sending and receiving reported error (0X80048002) This task was
cancelled before it was completed.

I certainly did not cancel this task. I have checked the settings I know
and scanned for virus.

Any suggestions?

Cutting and pasting should be no problem - we've worked at getting all
personal information out of the logfiles in Outlook 2002 and 2003 so that
they can be safely posted for the world to see. If you like, take a quick
look through the file to see if there's anything you don't want exposed and
replace it with 'x's.

While I can't offer any solutions right off, this is great stuff (from our
debugging standpoint, obviously not from your point of view!). You're
encountering something that appears to be behind a lot of crash reports that
we get, but have been unable to figure out - for some reason, your "Personal
Folders" (i.e. your message store) has been set as your default mail
account. As a result, Outlook tries to send all your new messages via an
"account" that can't send mail. When you reply, on the other hand, Outlook
uses the account on which you received the message you're replying to, and
everything works as it should. So a quick-fix solution would be to select
the proper account from the "Accounts" dropdown on the toolbar of any new
message you try to send. We'll work with you to get a better solution,
though.

There are two pieces of information that would be helpful in tracking this
down. If you'd send them to me, it might help us come up with the root
cause of this. My email address is (e-mail address removed) (remove
the 'X's in there - they're present to prevent spammer's address-harvesting
software from picking up my address).

1) In your "\Documents and Settings\<your login name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook" directory, you should find a file named
"Outlook.srs" (or if you've created a new profile, "<your profile
name>.srs". You may have to show hidden files in order to see it. Could
you send that to me? Also, rename it to something like "Outlook.bad" and
see if that fixes your problem.

2) I'd also like some information from your "registry" (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;256986 for
information about this). Can you run "regedit" and navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles? Under that you should see a list of mail
profiles on your machine - open the one that you're using (probably
"Outlook"), go to the key under it named "9375CFF0413111d3B88A00104B2A6676"
(which will be the only entry with a '+' next to it), right click on it, and
select "Export". Select "Text Files (*.txt)" from the "Save as type"
dropdown, then type a filename. Could you send me the resulting file as
well? Note that it will have an encrypted form of your password in it - if
you like, you can open the file with Notepad and delete the block that
starts with "POP3 Password".

Do you still have this problem? If you have how did you resolve it? I have
encountered the sane error message and have to reboot to receive or send
email.

I just fixed the problem, through dumb luck. Well, I should say that so far
the problem is fixed, at least for today.

I was going to transfer all my settings to another user account and was
copying (by hand) the information found under "tools-email accounts-view or
change existing accounts-email accounts" when I noticed that you can change
the order in which the email accounts appear and are accessed. In my case
the "Personal Folders" account was first (that was the one that continually
hung me up), I moved it into the last position and voila! my problem was
fixed.

I don't know if this is a premanent or temporary solution. I am just
thrilled that I did not have to reload or take some other drastic action.

I too had the same problem. Changed the 'Default' account from Personal
Folders to the correct ISP and it is working fine now (ie - tools-email
accounts-view or change existing email accounts--highlight the correct ISP
and click "Set as Default"). Now the ISP is the Default and first listed
followed by the Personal Folders.

Mike, what version of Outlook do you have? Did you upgrade a previous
version? The reality is that you should never see a "Personal Folders"
account in your account manager. When it appears, people have problems
like this, and we're trying to figure out how this happens. Our current
guess is that it happens during upgrade, but that's based on pretty slim
evidence...

I have now resolved the problem with your advice. I had my email address as
th edefault evealthough we dial up through my wifes.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

For your information my version of outlook is 2003 Version 11. It is not an
upgrade.
