I can no longer install programs in my "Programs" Folder

I always could before...then, as usual, I installed some Win XP updates,
which I'd been avoiding because whenever I do this sort of nonsense
happens...but I digress -- and now I can no longer install programs in my
"Programs" folder, nor can I download programs, because I don't have
Administrator Rights.

Huhhhhhhh? Says who? Has Microsoft now taken over my Adminstrator rights
to the point where they won't let me install programs where I want to?

What's up -- anyone else have/having/has had this problem? Any resolutions?
Help! I have work to do!

As far as I know, you are the ONLY one having this problem, so I assume YOU
screwed something up somewhere along the line.

In addition, Microsoft does not FORCE you to download updates. You always have
the choice to
1) NOT install updates automatically
2) Download updates automatically, but not allow Windows to install them without
your CHOOSING which ones to install.
3) Download updates automatically, but not allow Windows to install them until
you are ready.

How do YOU have Windows UPdates configured?
By the way, I decide which updates I want to install, and which ones I don't,
because I RESEARCH which updates will help my OS, and which ones will HARM it.
This is how I found out the unbridled Automatic Updates ALWAYS screws up my
machine by downloading an update for HP software (I have a Dell, not an HP, nor
do I have ANY HP software or hardware on my system). I've been fighting this HP
update for several years on various different machines. But Windows Update
always eventually offers it to me.

By the way, if you want to OWN your machine entirely, TAKE control of it by
giving YOUR account OWNER rights, then apply them to ALL files on ANY HD you are
using in your system (you DO know how to set rights on YOUR machine, don't
you?). If not, well RTFM, like everyone else does (or should)...
..

Hmmmm...well, Daniel, apparently you have a bit of an attitude problem;
addtionally, from your statement, you have not done any googling on this
subject. People are having this problem all OVER the place, so I am NOT the
only one having this problem --assumption #1 on your part.

You've also made quite a few other assumptions, and since I'm not an arse,
well, you know the saying, right?...tsk, tsk, tsk, my dear.

I never said MS "FORCED" me to download updates -- where'd you get that
idea? Oh yeah...you ASSUMED. I said I'd been putting it off because
whenever I DO updates, I run into problems.

This being said, pretty much your entire answer is rendered moot and
useless; hollow; invalid; and oh yeah...ignorant. Learn to read dude and
comprehend. Oh -- and try to be a bit more polite.

I DON'T do all udpates automatically -- again, ASSUMPTION! I also research
my updates to see if I can determine those that will or will not help and
then I do not install those I feel may harm my system -- DUH! Again,
ASSUMPTION! That doesn't mean that (a) I'm perfect and that (b) MS is always
forthcoming entirely in their description of each update, if you know what I
mean. Well, YOU probably don't.

Dear Sir -- I do know how to set the rights on my system, and I take offense
at your tone...I've probably been working on computers longer than you've
been on this planet. Again, ASSUMPTION!

I suggest in the future if you want to help a person, respond to them by
FIRST reading their issue, and then if you CAN help them...offer some sage
advise -- otherwise shut the heck up and don't say anything, especially if
your intention is to insult someone who's in need.
