I can connect to the net, but i cant get any pages to open...please help!:)

Gary

hello all,

for about 5 days now i have been able to connect to the
net but i cant get any web pages to open. here is a little
background on this:

had my comp for 2.5 years, running windows xp. one day i
could get on the net fine and the next day i couldnt.

i get this error message now everytime i start my computer:
"Mobile Devices Properties
TCP/IP transport is not installed"

the first thing i did was call my isp and they told me
that it sounds like my network protocols got messed up
somehow BUT to keep it short they basically told me that
since it is windows xp i need to call MS.(they also told
me to reinstall my isp software but that didnt work
either).

i call MS and speak with someone and they tell me since
the manufacturer installed it on the computer that i need
to call them.

i attempt to call the manufacturer but i cant get an
answer.

im not even close to being an expert but basically it
looks like the computer can connect to the net but
cant "talk" to anything.

if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this please let me
know, i have been trying to figure out for days how to fix
this.

if you have any suggestions please try to keep it simple
and if you have more than one idea please feel free to
list them all...thanks in advance for the help.

I have traced several of these problems to improperly configured winsock
LSPs. Run "winmsd" and go to Components/Network/Protocol. Look at the
names in the list, anything with "MSAFD" in it or the "RSVP xxx Service
Provider" should be fine. Anything else is suspect, and uninstalling the
owning program might help.

If that fails or your provider list is empty, you may need to rebuild the
catalog from scratch. The following instructions will rebuild your catalog
for TCP/IP. If you are using any other transports (If you don't know, then
you probably aren't) then you will have to reinstall them as well.

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Go to the network connections folder, right click the icon for your
network connection, and select properties.

4. Click install, choose "protocol", and click "add..."

5. Click "Have Disk...", enter "\windows\inf", click OK

6. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click OK

7. When the process in complete, reboot

Hi Again,

i tried your first suggestion and everything was "MSAFD"
or "RSVP".

i went to try your next suggestion but i realized that i
do not know where to find the registry keys. could you
tell me where to find them?

you also mentioned backing them up..i'm assuming if i save
them to a disk, that will be sufficient? thanks for the
help, i should have thought to ask you the above question
earlier.

You may want to print out the directions before you start.

Are you familiar with the registry editor (regedit.exe)? You have to be
pretty careful with this app because the registry contains all the Windows
settings.

Select the "Winsock" key under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services. Right click, Export
and save it to a file. Then right click, delete.

Repeat for the Winsock2 key.

Then on to step 2.

Have you tried the "Restore" function in XP?

<Start><Run> type in "msconfig" <OK> then click on "Restore my
computer......"

Pick a date before the problem occured and let her rip.
