Hyperlinks in word that will drag and drop to desktop

I cannot insert a hyperlink into a Word 2003 document that I can send to
others and that they can then drag and drop to desktop. Everytime I try, it
asks them if they want to "save the art", or it just drags it in scrap
format. Either way, it will not open the hyperlink from the desktop. How
can I get a "drag and dropable" hyperlink into a doc? Thanks in advance!

I don't get such a hyperlink here in Word 2007, either (get a SCRAP
object when pulling it to my own desktop). However, I've never seen
documentation that you _should_ be getting what you are asking for.

Word is hardly a good "wrapper" to send all kinds of objects. You could
type/copy the URL to the hyperlink into the email body, for instance.

Hi Susan,

To add a bit to Robert's reply.

Word and Internet Explorer handle parts of a page differently. As mentioned copying from a Word document and pasting to the desktop
create a 'scrap (.shs) file type) that Windows manages with its 'Shell scrap object handler' app.

From Internet Explorer you can drag a shortcut for the current page from the Address bar onto your desktop and it creates a Windows
shortcut object. You can right click on a hyperlink in a web page in Internet explorer and use 'copy shortcut' and also paste a
Windows shortcut object to your desktop.

You can in turn, copy and paste or drag and drop those into a Word document and they should work like hyperlinks. However, if you
use Alt+F9 in Word to see the field codes for those 'links' it will show 'embed Package' (an internet shortcut object') rather than
Word's usual 'hyperlink' field. With embedded objects, when you email the document, if the person receiving the document is viewing
documents in plain text they may never see the 'links' you put in, where they more often will if Word's 'hyperlink' fields are used.

If in Internet Explorer you right click the URL in the address bar or a hyperlink/shortcut in a web page and use copy then paste
directly into Word you should get a working hyperlink (when using Alt+F9 those should show as
{HYPERLINK ...
or in Word use Ctrl+K to access the Hyperlink dialog and navigate to or paste in the link you want inserted in the Word document.

To put Word Hyperlinks on your desktop you can, from inside Word, use

File=>Web Page Preview (Word 2000 thru 2003) and copy a hyperlink from the preview to the desktop

or right click on a hyperlink in Word, choose 'copy hyperlink', page it into your browser, hit enter to go to the page and then drag
the Address bar URL to your desktop.
