http and VPN

I just purchased a new laptop, after my last onedied. After installing
Outlook, I tried to enable http authentication so that I could pull in my
Exchange server e-mail. I configured it exactly like my old laptop, but
Outlook could not connect to the Exchange server. However, if I dial in to
VPN, then Outlook can connect to the server and pull in my e-mail. I have
tested the exact same settings on a different computer and the other computer
did NOT require VPN to pull in the e-mail. Is there some network setting
specific to the laptop that would restrict my ability to reach Exchange
server without VPN? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Sounds like you might have connected via RPC over HTTPs. There are some
screen shots of the dialogs at
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Outlook_2003_Connect_Exchange_2003.html
that cover what I'm thinking. Probably the easiest way to get to the dialog
is to right click on Outlook Today and select properties > advanced >
connection tab.
