HTML messages gray in preview and read

I'm using Outlook 2003 and I noticed that I see all messages sent to me in
HTML format shaded gray. They are shaded gray in the preview pain and when I
open and read them. I noticed if I open the message and go to Edit==>Edit
Message I can then go to Format==>plain text and it will turn white like
normal. Must be the way my system is trying to view HTML email messages. Any
idea how I did this and how I can change it back?

In case anyone interested I figured this out. I had turned off windows
colors in internet options in IE and the manual background color chosen so
happen to be gray.
