HTML Kit? Alleycode?

I'd rather stick with "assisted hand-coding" rather than use a WYSIWYG
editor.

HTML-KIT was PW '05, but looking at the website now, I can't tell whether
HTML-Kit is still freeware or will be for long. There is a registration
link - $55 for a single user - described as follows -

"By registering HTML-Kit you get time-saving pro add-ons, instant access to
plugins and more, while supporting HTML-Kit efforts and further development.
A free upgrade to the next version is also included when you register now."

Meanwhile I've been trying Alleycode, which seems to have some good buzz.
Been working through the tutorial, but it seems a bit glitchy to me.

Any opinions on these editors or whether there is something as good or
better out there.

Having used both I would stick with HTML-Kit. Both are good for initial
construction of a page, but Kit is better for editing a page already built.
Also, the ability to use templates and code snippets is a huge plus --
Alleycode doesn't offer that. Plus, Kit offers up validation and tidying --
IIRC Alleycode doesn't.

AFAIK, Kit is still freeware.

It depends on what you need. Just like you I don't want to use
wysiwyg-editors, so had a look at a helluva lot of html-editors, among
which were HTML Kit and Alleycode, but I did not like those at all
(hate all these Kit plugins, too much bother). I settled for Stone's
Webwriter 3.5, which I liked but it has one or two quirks whic I could
not live with. Afaik they have been ironed out in v. 4.0 but that
exists only in Danish. Luckily someone in this newsgroup drew my
attention to CSE HTML Validator Lite, which is not a validator at all
but a simple and good (X)HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript editor. I've been
using it for a few years now and have not found anything better (don't
want bloatware). There is a snag: it does not have a good global
search & replace, so I still have the old Webwriter installed as that
has excellent search & replace (for large chunks of code and text).
