I just purchased an HP M8000 with Vista. Yesterday, I started getting
numerous pop up windows with the message, "HPAsset is not working. Search
online for a solution". When I click on the search online, nothing happens.
I can't find this program on my PC or even know what it is. I contacted HP
support and the guy had me try some things, but nothing worked. I did a
search on MS website and nothing helpful turns up.

Anybody know what this is and how to get rid of this message.

Since this is obviously an HP item, contact HP tech support.

I did and they were not of much help. The guy didn't seem to understand the
issue and the fix he gave me did not work. May have to try again and get
someone else.

If you can't get it fixed within the "no fault" return period, take it back
to the seller and return it. As the other person said, this is obviously an
HP utility, not a Vista utility. Do a search on your HD for "hpasset" and
see what turns up. If it's in your startup folder (heh... if that's what
it's still called in Vista) then maybe deleting the shortcut will prevent
the app from starting and throwing the error msgs. It might also be in the
Run key in the registry. If it's there, you could whack that entry and that
would prevent it from running.

I typed hpasset into the searchbar and had no problem finding many, many
articles on the subject. You can type almost anything in the searchbar and
get an answer. You should try it sometime.

I am having that same pop up and I have no clue where it is hiding. I have
looking all over and I can't find a thing about it or anywhere to turn it off.

Do a clean boot. Something that HP has installed, either preinstalled
with all the cr*p they put on at the factory or from some HP software
you've installed such as a printer, is the culprit.

How to perform a clean boot in Vista and XP:

I also contacted HP online and they told me to go into HP Advisor,
preferences, messaging and then uncheck all options under "connections"
and also check no under "customer experience enhancements". He said
that would be a temporary fix and that I should check back in about 2
weeks to see if they have a permanent fix. Unfortunately, I did what
he said, but I am still getting the errors.

If I take off Total Care Advisor as was suggested by another post, what
do I do about updates etc?

You *should* take off "Total Care Advisor". You can just check for
updates at HP's support site if you feel you need them. Once your
machine is running stable, unless you're a gamer you don't need to be
messing about with updating anything anyway.
