HP6200C Scanner

I have posted to this forum several times in the past.
I have an HP 6200C Scanner, a Dell Dimension 8250 Computer and I use
VueScan (the latest version).
Communication between the scanner and the computer is very tenuous and
the connection gets broken after, sometimes, just one scan of a
picture.
I have been in extensive contact with HP and with Dell and neither of
them have made any suggestions that mitigate the problem.
Several responders have suggested that I use a SCSI connection instead
of the USB connection which I use now.
My question now is what SCSI card have others had experience with.
Thank you

On my desktop (mothballed for quite a few years now) I used an Adaptec
card on the now long obsolete VESA bus.

More recently on my notebook I used an Adaptec 1460 PCMCIA card to
connect to a Nikon LS-30 without any problems.

But before you go the SCSI route, possible wasting more time and
money, have you tested your setup with native HP software? USB is far
more forgiving than SCSI where you have to watch everything
(termination, cable lengths, ID number, etc.) So if you're having
problems with USB - odds are - SCSI will just make matters worse.

Vuescan is notoriously buggy and unreliable so the first test should
really be to try and see if native software works.

I am using an Adaptec AHA 2930CU and seems to work well with the 6200C. The
scanner has a 50-pin mini connector. If you go with a card having the same
connector, you won't need a cable adapter and should be able to easily find
a 50-pin mini SCSI cable. The scanner seems to work well without any
termination, but should you experience some errors, you might check into
using a passive terminator. Some eBay fare:

I used to use an Adaptec 1505 (in a MB w/an ISA slot) and the 6200C worked
fine...also works with my Adaptec 1460 on my laptop (Inspiron 8200)...also
works fine with the USB (1.1) ports on both of the previously mentioned
computers.
But, I've never used VueScan...possibly a VueScan problem???

What do you mean with "very tenuous"? Is it the
irregular/unpredictable connection? If there is no repeatability, e.g.
scanning a certain file always results in broken connections, then it
is most likely an interface issue. Try disconnecting as many USB
devices as possible and then connect them one-by-one and scan after
each new addition, obviously starting with the scanner.
I have been in extensive contact with HP and with Dell and

I assume they did suggest at least something ... Did you (temporarily)
disable the HP software that "listens" for a scanner's presence, or
did you not install it alltogether?

It should be able to get the scanner to run under USB, provided you
don't try to run more than one scanner at a time if you're using Win
XP. There is no guarantee that SCSI will work, if USB doesn't.
My question now is what SCSI card have others had experience
with.

Adaptec 2930 (which is what I use) or 2940 are overkill, but seem to
work well. A cheaper card is also possible, because the data flow is
usally not high enough for the interface to be an obstacle.

The HP 6200c has had problems with the USB interface since day one. This
why they have had the software patches and firmware updates on the HP site.
I have never been able to get my 6200c USB to work regardless of the OS
version. Back when, many users on the HP forums resolved the problem by
going to the SCSI interface. With the price of some good flatbed USB
scanners being so low, it might be time I looked at retiring my 6200c
workhorse.

BTW, I use both Vuescan and the PrecisionScan software. No issues with the
software that I have found.

I'd give up on the HP6200C and get a different scanner. I bought
one of these new a few years back. It didn't get very heavy use but
after about 18 months it crapped out - I could sometimes get one
scan out of it and then it'd lock up. (And unlocking it required
reloading the HP drivers!!!)

I then bought a refurb HP6200C from HP, which arrived with a dead
lamp. I shipped that back to HP and bought a used HP6200C on
eBay, and at the same time bought a SCSI card. (No, the SCSI
card didn't help the original scanner.) The used unit ran OK
for about a year and then started taking a long time (if ever)
calibrating itself before it actually began the scan. It's
still connected but I never know whether it'll work or not.
I only use it when I need a photocopy or two and _sometimes_
it saves me a trip to the local copy center.

As I recall the HP6200C cost new about $300 - certainly not an
inexpensive scanner. I would have expected a lot better from
HP for that kind of money and now wouldn't touch another HP
scanner if you paid me.

I've had an HP 6250C (auto doc feed) for several years. It was in the
$300 - $400 range.

Mine runs flawlessly, including the doc feed. Where I find it really
lacking is in trying to scan 35mm color slides, Kodachrome,
Technicolor, etc.. That mirrored adapter, under which you place the
slide, just doesn't seem to be at all useful.

Has anyone been able to properly scan slides with this scanner?

Thanks.
