Help needed to get scanner 'recognised' on SCSI

I have a canon FS4000US film scanner and XP home computer. I installed an
adaptec SCSI card AHA 2940 AU. All worked fine until having to reload
windows, now Vuescan says no scanner is connected. The SCSI card info comes
up on bootup and the message "Press <CTRL><A> for SCSI select (TM) Utility!"
comes up followed by "SCSI ID 2-CANON 1X-400015G". I am not sure if this is
right. I can't recall whether before (when it worked) the ID was actually
FS4000US. Can anyone help - what do I need to do to test/get it working?
Could it be Vuescan software? Thanks

Install ASPI from Adaptec. Direct download:

When you double click the Exe, it will create a new folder on your drive
where you specify.
\adaptec\aspi

Use aspiinst.exe to install, do not use the install.bat (it does not work).
There is aspichk.exe for checking the installation of ASPI system.

Window XP and 2000 do not have a Programming Interface for SCSI, Windows
98SE did.

You need the specific driver for XP and the card. It is available on
the Adaptec site.

Read ALL the documentation and load the driver mentioned in the
paragraph that talks about loading. The correct file to load is
mentioned in the header of the subject site. ("Note the filename is
different from the version name." Please read carefully the
"Installation Instructions" from the web site.

Adaptec told me the SCSI card AHA 2940 is a card to use for XP. Also
the 2906 and the 2940. The difference is apparently the throughput. The
2940 being the fastest. I use a 2930.

Is the SCSI card recognized under control panel/system/hardware/device
manager?
If it is then you have a correct driver installed which, I believe, is
included in the WinXP installation CD.
You do not need the ASPI program except to examine the SCSI peripherals you
have connected.
The Canon 4000 scanner is very finicky about its SCSI settings, even if it
is the only SCSI device connected to your computer. Make sure the scanner is
set to use SCSI instead of USB. Make sure all the SCSI connector pins are
straight and seating properly--SCSI cable and connectors are not that hardy.
Finally, you may have to experiment with several different SCSI settings on
the scanner. Theoretically any number should work if this is the only SCSI
device but theory and reality are not always the same.

Assuming scanner is okay, only ASPI is needed (as you mention). ASPI
(Advanced SCSI Programming Interface) is not a device driver. ASPI
v4.71.2 is interface for all Windows OS except Win95.

Btw, I couldn't get it to install on XP, and this seems to be a common
problem. Solution is to use a program called "Force ASPI", which
installs an earlier version, 4.6 I believe, which works fine. Force ASPI
can be downloaded from many places just Google "force aspi".

If the Adaptec download version fails, you can use the aspichk.exe
included with it to check for proper installation after using Force
ASPI.

Strangely enough I do not recall having to do anything before for it to work
so the current situation is a bit frustrating. I daresay somewhere there is
something i have not done/done wrong but i will follow all the advice given
here. I have not changed the settings and it is still set to SCSI rather
than USB. I used USB when I first got the scanner but it was VERY slow only
being 1.1. I always HATE reloading Windows as this sort of problem usually
happens with something or other 'not working'. I was under the impression
that XP usually automatically 'recognised' devices. The SCSI is visible on
the hardware device profile anyway and the canon device ("SCSI ID 2-CANON
1X-400015G") only displays when it is powered up at computer boot, so I'll
have to devote a 'rainy day' to trying to sort out - I hate it though - so
frustrating!

If the suggestions don't help, I have a program that will try to access
the FS4000 via SCSI or USB. It does report startup errors so it might
help you locate the problem. Please ask if interested.
