When I got this new computer, I tried to install the
driver for my HP 5100C scanner. It caused a complete
system failure, forcing me to re-install Windows XP. I
lost all my files. HP says they do not have a Windows XP
driver for this scanner.

I have the following questions:
1. Can I use the drivers within XP?
2. How do I know that drivers for other things i.e. my
Fuji 2650 digital camera -- will not cause a similar
failure?
3. How can I tell if other applications -- "Tides and
Currents," "Captain Voyager," "C-Map," etc. will not
cause my system to crash?

I have one question regarding Office Pro for Small
Business. I ordered this computer (Polywell, Athlon
XP2700, 2.17 gHz, 256M DRAM)with Office XP for Small
Business thinking that it included Power Point. But no
Power Ppoint was installed. Was I wrong in assuming Power
Point would be part of the package?

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks.

From the information available on the MS website, you are correct. There is
actually no product with the name you mention. Basically there is Office and
Office Pro , the difference being that Pro has Access. Both have:
a.. Word
b.. Excel
c.. Outlook
d.. PowerPoint
You appear to be missing an application.

I could not install my HP 4100C scanner on my new
computer either, Steven, but XP (Home Edition) recognized
the scanner and provided a driver that makes it work as
well as it did with the original HP software in Win98.
The only exception is that XP apparently has no OCR
utility to edit and save text documents. Everything gets
saved as a picture with a jpeg file extension.

As to your other questions, there are no guarantees,
which is why you want to have and use a backup system
with a hard drive as big as yours. And "yes," you were
expecting too much. Power point is a huge and expensive
program. Are you thinking about upgrading your memory to
512 or even 1.0 gig? You seem a little undernourised in
the RAM department for all the stuff you are running.
I've heard that 512 Megs is the standard now for mid
level desktops, maybe notebooks too. Good luck....Jack
