HP Scanjet 3970 as a fax machine?

I did some searching through the newsgroups about using a scanner as a fax
machine. I couldn't find anything that mentioned the ability to do this with
a cable modem. Is it possible to send a scan to a fax machine using a cable
modem? I have an HP Scanjet 3970. And a cable modem.

No, fax requires a regular fax modem on a telephone line. A cable modem
is not connected to the phone line, and is not designed to place a telephone
call to a fax machine (which expects to answer a telephone call).

However, there are online fax services that can send a fax for you via
internet, from your browser or email program instead of the scanner. Search
for internet fax to find a few of them.
