Normally there is software provided with the printer. Check the manual
or CD that came with the printer. Also see www.hp.com for information
and manuals on the specific printer.
Julie, I have an older HP 882 C Desk Jet. Recent black cartridges have a
green box on them , giving some indication of ink amount. I've found nothing
that shows amount of ink on color cartridges or in the software. Embarrassed
to say I've never asked HP about it. I'm frugal (cheap) and use a refill kit
and every now and then, top them off just to be safe.

the 882c is an excellent printer, but it pre-dates the ink
level reporting cartridges and on-screen displays.
