HP Printer Problem

R

Romgyp

Installed a Deskjet 5550 on a new e-machine running XP
with 3 users, 1 administrator and 2 children. Printer
works when user is administrator. WHen switch user to one
of the children printer will not print. WHen change
properties to move from spooling to print directly to
printer it will print but only after like 5 minutes. Does
anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Usually this is seen where the children are limited users and you have
Norton Antivirus installed on the PC... something in NAV interferes with the
print spooler, but since I do NOT write drivers or code software, I have
absolutely no idea exactly what is might be.

Solution would be to choose an alternative antivirus software and dump
Norton.

Couple of suggestions:

Have the same problem. Went to both HP and E-machine for
help. Both blame problem on XP. Don't have a solution -
sorry.

If you have the same problem, you get the same reply!

Putting my psychic's hat on here, you're using Windows XP Home and it has
Norton AntiVirus installed.

Go into the Control Panel, click on Printers & Faxes, right click on your
printer and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab and now look in the
middle of that screen. Click on the button to Print Directly to Printer
(rather than using the Print Spooler). Something in Norton disables the
print spooler for limited users, though I have no idea what since I don't
code or program!

With XP "HOME" I have the same problem as this. I do NOT have any Norton Software or other antivirus software on a stand alone machine at home as I don't require any. So far I've tried:

1) Uninstalling all HP software and drivers and re-installling.
2) Deleting limited user and re-creating
3) Setting limited user to admin and installing printer from user, this works until it's changed back to a limited user.
4) Created completely new limited user and installed printer.
5) Tried to find the security tab for the printer properties in XP Home, but it's not available.
6) Searched other forums.
7) Decided now that it's XP Home unless there are any other ideas that don't include the above.

Hi Cari, thanks for the reply. I realise that you mentioned the Advanced Tab. I was only listing what I had done so that I don't forget :)

Using the print direct option is also one of the options I have tried, and unfortunately, this doesn't solve the problem for me either. I've also seen replies where although it works it can take an age to produce a print.

So for the time being I'm up the creek without a paddle as they say.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Cari,
It's on a USB port of which there are 6. I tried them all separately, and even re-installed the HP s/w each time.

Are these USB ports on the motherboard or a hub? If a hub, powered or
unpowered?

Do you have any firewall software installed? Any antivirus (other than
Norton)?

Hello -
I have HP Deskjet 5550 - which was working just fine through 6:00pm 7/9/2004. When I wanted to print lunchtime on 7/14/2004 I suddenly found that the printer looked as if it was about to print and then spat out pages with a single line of symbols.
I did ALL the steps suggested and it is still not working. I run with grisoft antivirus and there appear to be no conflicts.
Any suggestions?
