HP PhotoSmart 1000 Printer

My Compaq Presario 2100 omputer is a 'Plug & Play'
system. The Hp printer did work but now the Compaq
doesn't recognize it - even using the CD driver that came
with ths printer.
The test page prints but nothing from the Compaq will
print directly from the computer.
Any help will be appreciated.

OK, the way PnP works is the device informs XP of what it is. XP tells you
by way of the bubble in the lower right of your screen that a printer was
found. (The computer really has nothing to do with it except to say they
offer you a USB port(s).)

It sounds like something may have happened to the HP printer driver.

I recommend you:
1. disconnect the printer device from the computer
2. reboot your computer and then make sure any there are no HP programs
running when you start-up (check Task Manager)
2. uninstall any software that applied to the HP printer
3. reboot
4. once you've logged in, goto HP's web site and get the latest XP drivers
for this printer and then follow the installation instructions (some
manufacturers don't want you to plug in the printer until AFTER you've
installed the software first - so double check this.)

NOTE: Make sure the printer is plugged directly into your computer (no
hubs).

good luck!
