HP PC with XP pre-installed hangs after service pack update

Hi all, desperate here
Have a home HP Pavillion 750.uk PC with XP pre-installed,
recently carried out full recovery and since then no end
of issues, PC hanging on windows welcome screen going into
loop of rebooting, welcome screen etc etc

HP asked me to return PC and replace motherboard why ??

Running PC last night , notification comes up for new
windows update and same problem again

When starting in safe mode seems to hang on agp440.sys
though this may be a red herring... help please
 
I had the same problem on my Dell with hanging on
the "apg440.sys" while trying to boot in Safe Mode after
a blue screen.

The Dell Dude told me that it was a piece of "Flash BIOS"
firmware (???) that needed to be installed. I installed
it and it works fine so far. The software updates got
ahead of this firmware update and was causing problems.
