Is this a Vista upgrade ?? What HP Oblivion is this ???

Any other "useful" information may help us guess better.

Your drive, a matsh1ta, is really a Panasonic, you may find they have something ... maybe.

MS says ...

"The start type for this driver is set to disabled in the registry. Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver."

Optical drives don't have 'drivers' per-say, they are part of the OS ... look in Device Mangler for any yellow errors, failing that, delete any & all instances of the CD drive & reboot ... should re-find the drive.

Still no joy, have tried deleting hardware and re-instaling, still getting error code 39

Well then tryto install some other version of it and if the error comes again then replace it ....
