HP Officejet r80xi

I have an HP Officejet r80xi AIO that Ive used flawlessly for three years. I
love that machine.

I borrowed and installed a Dell 922 AIO over the weekend for a test, and it
disabled the scanning function in the HP. Not good. So I uninstalled the
Dell hoping the HP's settings would be restored. Nope. I completely
uninstalled the HP and reinstalled it again from scratch, but the HP still
wouldn't scan. I called Dell and they freely admitted it was a 'function' of
the Dell software to do that. I complained that I needed my HP to work
properly and as far as I was concerned, the Dell software was responsible.
They said that sure 'nuff, they could fix it over the phone, but they would
charge me $99 to do it. Hmmmm, let's see, if Guido flattens my tire while Im
watching and then offers to fix it only if I pay him, that's called
extortion.

So Im stuck here. Can anybody help in the registry area? Or know of any
other way I can get my HP to scan again?

Here is HP's tech help on the not scanning problem.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&product=59271&lang=en&cc=us&printable=yes&

If the above page does not fix your problem then try:

Backup the registry.

First remove the HP software, You do not want it installed when you hunt the
registry for HP and Dell entries.

Hunt down the registry entries for the Dell and delete them. Also hunt down
the HP entries. (I think Dell corrupted them).
Start>Run. Type regedit<Enter>
Warning, regedit has NO undo, be careful!
Reboot the computer after regedit.

After you have deleted in the registry, reboot then install the HP software
and see where you are.

Ive been through all the HP stuff, on the phone and the web, and tried the
fix on that page... it doesn't work. The problem with removing Dell entries
from the Registry is that this is a Dell computer. There is no way to know
if Im removing Dell scanner entries or Dell computer entries.

I see your point.

That means you would only look for Scanner or Printer related items.
If you read the keys and data, they will often say printer or scanner.
There is a way to find what your computer calls the Dell scanner/printer.

That is if the TWAIN is still installed.

Look at C:\Windows\Twain_32\scanner_name\*.ds file for what the name of the
folder and/or the *.ds file is called. Then search for that name in the
registry.

For example my Canon CanoScan 8400F scanner is found here. This is the TWAIN
driver for it.
D:\WINDOWS\twain_32\CNQ8400\CISDS.ds

In the above my Windows XP is on D:
Search in regedit for CNQ8400 and you will find my scanner in the registry
in at least two places.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Canon\ScanGear\10.2\Devices\CNQ8400

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Twain
Your scanner should be at the same keys, but different names.

I find CISDS in three places.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Twain

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-507921405-1935655697-1801674531-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Twain

Good luck!
And if you find the offending keys, please post them here for everyone to
see.

Well, I did all as suggested. But the scanning function still doesn't get
recognized. I made a few more calls to HP and Dell tech support. They all
say the same thing... look at the web page, otherwise we can't help.

So, I guess Im SOL. Thanks anyway.

Did you ever try Windows XP Restore, back to a time before you installed the
Dell multifunction?

I really hate XP Restore, but other then doing a complete Clean Install of
Windows XP, it is the only other choice.

It may be to your advantage to pay Dell's $100.

Well, I thought about that, but Ive loaded quite a few apps since then and
done some tweaking. id hate to lose all that and start over... almost from
scratch.

Yeah, that is why I hate XP restore, But the other way is just as bad, you
format the HD and install XP, updates, then all of the programs from
original media.

A complete start over. Just remember to backup your data before the format.
