HP Laserjet 1000 Printer

My HP laserjet 1000 has started printing with black smudges all over
the paper. I am guess that the printer needs to be cleaned but am
unsure how to go about cleaning it. Any ideas?

Appreciate any help that can be given.

Thanks

Go to www.hp.com;
search for "laserjet 1000";
download the manual.
(No cleaning instructions in
the HP page "Maintenance.")
Manual pp. 49 ff. describe cleaning
routines.

1. Laser printers use a glass cylinder
to transfer toner to paper. You may be
able to clean this cylinder.
2. Laser printers use a "fuser wire" to
pick up toner from its reservoir. You may
be able to clean this wire.
3. The commonest source of smudges
in laser printers is inferior no-brand toner.

Ususally smudges caused by spilled toner do not persist, as more and more paper
is fed through the printer the smudges become less and less. Is this happening,
if not then the cause is something other than a clean being needed.
What is the nature of the smudges? Is there a repetitive pattern down the page?
Or is there a band of gray that goes all the way down the page (could be more
than one band)?
If the pattern is repetitive what exactly to the nearest millimetre is the
distance between the start of one smudge and the start of the next smudge
(vertical distance on a portrait page)? This will tell me the probable cause of
the problem.

I should have said, do not be tempted to clean the imaging drum (cylinder) in
the toner cartridge, if you do you will almost certainly do damage to the drum.

I looked at the sumges and there really does not appear to be a
pattern to them. I tried cleaning and also the self cleaning tool but
it did not work. The cartridge is an HP cartridge that I purchased 6-8
months ago but it does not get that much use. I did not have any
problems at all until a couple weeks ago when it just started doing it.
It is all over the page. One odd thing is that it when printing a
document in the smuges there are shadows of the words. For example if
the document has wording at the top 0 in the middle of the document the
same wording can be faintly seen in the smuges.

Thanks for your help on this.

Hi Guys..

I have just recently begun to have the same problem with my hp1000.
There is a 12 mm wide by 1.5mm high smudge at the top center of the
page and then shadow printing (smudged) at 7.5 mm below the original
text or image. The page is really messy.

Any input would be helpful....
Thanks, Leo

What you are seeing in the smudges is a reflection.
This is almost always caused by a failed drum in the toner cartridge but on
rare occasions it can be caused by the fuser.

There is one more thing you can do, measure the exact vertical distance between
the original text and the reflection. That is from the top of the original text
to the top of the reflected text. Let me know what that distance is (very
accurately please) and I will be able to confirm whether this is the cartridge
or something else.

Do you really mean 7.5mm or is it 7.5cm????
If it is 7.5cm (7.54 to be precise) then that mark is caused by the drum, and
you need to change the cartridge.

Tony..

It is cm not mm. I was under the influence of children. And the
distance is about 7.65 cm to the ghost shadow image. Does that imply
that the printer is ok, but the toner cartridge is faulty?

Thanks,
Leo

If you are having no other problems then the printer is OK.
A new cartridge will fix the image problem.
Rulers vary don't they? You wouldn't expect so but some are a more than a mm
out!
Bummer
Good luck

Tony - the distance bewteen the reflections is 7 3/5 cm. Thanks again
for your help.

OK, then the drum is the cause of the reflections. The drum is in the toner
cartridge so buying a new toner cartridge will correct the reflections and
almost certainly the smudges.
