HP is #1 PC vendor again

Must be retail. Corporations right and left are dropping IBM, HP,
etc. in favor of Dell. Or it's just my luck (or lack thereof) to get
a Dell from the client every time I start a new project?

Nope, overall worldwide sales. Dell doesn't really do retail, so
passing them in retail wouldn't be much of a news story.

It should be noted though that this is WORLDWIDE sales. If you're in
the US you will likely see a slightly different scenario. Dell still
has a fairly substantial lead in the US but have tended to do much
worse in the rest of the world.

That's exactly the case, Dell still holds a substantial lead over HP in
the US. This other article had a bit more details. It shows that Dell
has 31-32% and HP has 22-23% in the US. But that shouldn't be a
surprise, Dell is largely a America-only success story. It doesn't
really hold much presence in the rest of the world (although the rest of
the world has quite likely heard about it). Although it is trying to
build a presence in places like China, Dell isn't really there anywhere
else in between.

It's overall worldwide shipments. Dell doesn't really have a presence
outside big centres like US, China, Europe. HP on the other hand is well
distributed everywhere. With a large concentration of Dell sales in the
US, it may look like Dell is still mopping up the competition. Although
it's also reduced a bit in the US, it's still quite a bit bigger than HP
in the US. So you're likely going continue to see a lot of companies
switching to Dell, but it's likely going to be a decelerating number.
