laptop makers seeking better standards for lithium-ion batteries

Well this is great, but I would've thought those standards already
existed. I guess not.

Also interesting is that most of the major laptop makers did not seem
to attend this meeting, including Sony itself! So even if the standard
gets set, who's going to follow it?

Laptop Vendors Seek Better Battery Standard - Yahoo! News
"A group of laptop vendors and battery manufacturers plans to announce
a standard for making safer lithium ion batteries by June 15, 2007, in
an attempt to recover from a massive series of battery recalls in
recent months.

The new standard will cover "process requirements, quality control and
assurance" for all forms of rechargeable lithium ion battery cells,
from prismatic to cylindrical and pouch, according to the Association
Connecting Electronics Industries, known as IPC."

They conveniently forgot to mention all the lawsuits that already have
been filed, and the ones that surely will be filed. That's the real
reason behind the whole "Better Battery Standard", and not their care
about customers as they will try to spin it. Hey, sometimes lawyers
could be beneficial for the society ;-)

Yes, that but I think it is also an attempt to proactively frame some
standards rather than be flat-footed when it comes time to react to FTC
regulations.
