HP computers and XP SP2

B

Bert

If you have a HP computer and intend to install XP SP2, please read on:

"I would like to inform you that the operating systems that are shipped with
HP computers are OEM versions and include some additional feature which are
not available in retail version of Operating systems. These Operating
systems are customized for specific HP models to get maximum output from the
computer. Any service pack which Microsoft launches are based on the
Operating system in general and not the OEM version thus installing the
service pack directly may affect the normal functioning of the PC..

Hewlett-Packard is working in advance of the SP2 release to ensure that your
upgrade experience is efficiently accomplished.

Before upgrading to SP2, you may need to obtain additional SP2-compatible
software updates, or take other steps to prepare your computer. For more
information, visit the following HP Web site:

Does that read "Don't buy HP."?

No, it just means you need to do your homework before updating. The same as
you would do even if you built the system yourself, but it looks like HP has
already done the homework for their users.
Did you actually look at the web page that was linked from the OP? I doubt
it!! Otherwise you wouldn't have made such a <fill in the blank> statement.

I contacted HP BEFORE installing SP2 and they told me
what I needed to do for my computer to be ready for SP2.
All it takes is a little time and effort and read ahead
of time and find these things out. Now I have SP2 with NO
troubles what so ever.

Confirms my suspicion Ron Reaugh didn't check out the link to HP and was
just making uninformed comment based on an unfair but common assessment of
HP. I find HP to be very reliable and extremely on top of their systems
upgradeability expectations. I have a 3 year old HP laptop that just
continues to amaze me with what I throw on it. I have added a USB 2.0 card
and run a DVD-RW CD-RW USB drive and an external usb IDE 120 gig hard drive
along with a 9 in 1 card reader. Plus most of the time I use it with a
wireless connection.
BTW I challenge anyone to build a comparable OEM system for the same price
as the OEM with the same software.
I build my own systems, but not because it is cheaper. I do it for my
enjoyment and learning experience.

I read the HP page and it indicated I had to apply the patch for
system restore before SP2; I tried but it aborted because I have
reformatted my system installing XP Pro instead of the original XP
Home that was bundled. I installed SP2 & guess what...system restore
doesn't work!

However, you can likely remove SP2 from Add/Remove programs which will
restore the starting point.
