HP 713a, XP SP2 and KB835409

Hi all: In helping a friend get ready to install XP SP2 on his HP 713a
computer, I came across reference to the Microsoft QFE Update KB835409 on
the HP software and drivers downloads web page for this computer. This is a
patch to system restore which presumably only applies to specific computers.

However, I cannot find any reference to this article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base. HP tech support were not helpful beyond telling me not to
install XP SP2 on this computer. (?) Anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks in advance. Please address any replies to the news group. My email
address is false. Bert Smith

If HP support says NOT to install SP2 on that system, I would listen. HP systems come
with much proprietary hardware, and HP probably tested SP2 on that system, and probably
ran into problems that cannot be patched, or fixed with new drivers, or has found it
economically unfeasible to write new SP2 compatible drivers for one of more components of
that system. I don't remember whether it was HP or Dell, but when SP1 was released, one
of those companies had an OEM version of SP1 for download at their web site, and warned
not to download the Microsoft version of SP1. If it isn't a new system, and you don't
need the WiFi support, the Free version of Zone Alarm will take care of having a firewall,
there are also many free pop-up blockers, and you can do without SP2, rather than
installing something that HP warned you not to install, and risk trashing the system.

I too looked for info on this KB835409, called HP & they
advised me to install SP2 with the free disk from
Microsoft & not worry about this patch. My pc is less
than 2 months old & was a made to order & I'm even
thinking of calling HP again before I do this SP2
download. I was hesitant on installing SP2 & was
encouraged by the tech at HP to do so when I get the CD
from MS. But then again I'd definately do as they say in
your case...I did find out that the only thing that will
be helped by the KB835409 is it will give your some
restore points to go off. If you don't install it then
you won't have any system restore dates to go back to. At
least this is how I understood it.
Good Luck, JD

Experience without KB835409
===================

I have an HP Pavilion N5420 laptop running Windows XP SP1. I decided to do
the SP2 upgrade without KB835409.

Here are the results: After the installation of SP2 the System Restore
points created under SP1 were not listed as available restore points, not
even the one that SP2 created just prior to its own installation. But if SP2
works you really don't want these incompatible restore points anyway. If you
are going to uninstall SP2 you would use the SP2 uninstall interface rather
than system restore. A restore point created under SP2 after the upgrade
worked just fine so KB830905 is apparently not needed for the function of
system restore once SP2 is in place -- it is just a hedge to keep the old
restore points around during the upgrade.

Hi all
My sincere thanks go to the people who have responded to my original post.
I am very disappointed that I can find nothing on the HP web site re
possible problems incurred by downloading and installing SP2 on certain HP
computers. Please address any replies to the news group. My email address
is false. Bert Smith
