HP and Update

Hi:
My computer is HP and in the past, like anyone else, I installed 'SP 1'
purchased by mail from MS. However, I got a bad experience on which
the computer started to get VERY slow and sluggish. Since then, I never
installed any of 'update' even though there is, every day, 'update' ballon
popping up on the right hand of the corner bottom.

Today, in my concern over security, I purchased 'Spy Sweeper' because
my machine getting 'slow' to open and my friend told me in needing some
form of security.

On the hand, ... however, whether I should download at least
'security'/update by
accessing MS or just put 'Spy Sweeper' I purchased today.
I just can NOT make a decision what or which one I should be done.

I would be very grateful if you could offer me inputs and opinions on my
confusion.

Most problems with updates are because of viruses, spyware or other
pre-existing problems.
A clean computer is less likely to have problems related to updates.
