I have cleaned the service station.
I have the cover off.
I have the lid sensor defeated.
I have cleaned the encoder strip - it seems like the lines may be scraped
off in places - and I don't know if it may be upside down.
Which way is up?

If I power it on with the carriage in the service station and the sled
pushed back, it lights the green and orange lights.
If I power it off with the carriage in the service station and the sled
pushed back, it goes left


If I power it on with the carriage in the middle, it either...
goes to the extreme left, reverses a very short distance, stops, and
blinks the middle (orange) light.or...
goes left, not to the end, then right to the service station, to get
blocked or trapped by the sled depending on where the sled is.

When I shut it off with the carriage at the left, it tries to move left
briefly and shuts off.
If I power it on with the carriage at the left, it lights both the right
(green) light and the middle (orange) light.

When it moves the sled, it's always to the _extreme_front_ which traps the
carriage in or out of the service station, depending on where it was.

Can anyone tell me what's the matter ?

The Printer should have an encoder wheel made of the same material as the
strip, which you could check(on the left side). On my 3820 it collected a
thick stripe of debris coming from a tiny, insignificant scratch, as the
wheel made slight contact with the photosensor module.
