HP 930 deskjet printer ink supply

My HP 930 says the color cartridge is low on ink... how can this be???
I have my preferences set for black printing... perhaps only a dozen color
prints at max..
Does this printer calculate the ink used by an internal counter???
considering all copies as color???
Ive taken the cartridge apart and there does not appear to be any kind of
electronic or physical measuring device in the cartridge... what really
gets me is that the sponge holding the ink only had about 1/4 of the
sponge filled with ink to begin with ... seems like a total rip off.
Does any one know how to defeat the cartridge detection so they can be refilled?
Many thanks

Ive had mixed results with the info widely decimated on the net about
resetting HPs. Sometimes it worked and othertimes it didnt. I dont
know if HP has since changed their cartridges to defeat this.

I quickly mothballed my 940c and bought a Canon 470D which was often
discounted to $49 and even lower the last year. They have a newer
replacement out now but its usually $80. The low end canon the PIXMA
sells at Compusa etc for $49 and its about as good as the 900 series
and the black ink cartridge costs about $8 and the color about $18.
The capacity is low though but you can buy tons of third party inks
for dirt cheap Ive seen so the canons are very low cost printers to
operate. The head is in the printer so the cartridges are cheap. Also
refills ar super easy because of this too. Just one ink replacement
for the HP pays for a canon.

For black and white don't buy an inkjet in the first place. You
will always be troubled by ink and clogging problems. Get a low
priced laser printer. My Samsung ML 4500 cost $199 four years
ago, is running on its first $60 replacement toner, and has never
clogged any jets or complained about empty cartridges. It is also
much faster.
