HP 895Cxi - driver won't install

I have a HP 895Cxi plugged in to a USB port. The control panel recognises it
under "other" in the device list and says it is working properly. However the
driver will not install either from Vista internally or with the driver from
the disc it came with. Even when I do the search on the web and try to
install, the same message always comes up "a problem has been encountered" I
am posting again in hopes someone can help me out.
Thanks

You are supposed to install the software BEFORE you connect the printer to
the PC.

Whether the printer is hooked up or not, the problem is that the driver gets
an error part way through installing.

Have you done a search/look around here in this newsgroup? There is at
least one other thread dealing with the HP DJ 895 and problems
installing it.

I have looked at other posts but my problem is different. I tried a different printer (Canon Pixma 6600) The computer recognizes it and begins installation of the driver but before it completes the same error comes up " encountered an error". So I went into the control panel and manually selected various printer drivers an tried to install them. None of them worked. They all come up with the same error.
I am baffled as to whats happening. Did Vista not install properly?

I don't know the Canon -- is it one certified as VISTA compatible with
fully featured drivers? The HP 895 is an old old timer and the drivers
out of the box with VISTA are often very limited in what they will do.

If you clean up completely and remember to install the software before
you plug in the USB cable -- if that is what you are using -- then
perhaps try using the HP XP fully featured software and VISTA's
Compatibility and Run as Administrator modes?

It might be worth checking your VISTA for updates including on the
Microsoft Installer in case that is the problem and, yes I forgot, turn
off/disable your antivirus program and software firewalls until after
you have installed the printer. If you are worried, unplug the internet
connection while you do this.
