Each time I log on to windows XP from hibernation, the drivers for the HP
2001 printer/scanner load. Is this correct or should they be loaded on
booting?

A guess is that the reload is necessary to avoid problems with the scanner
initialization when you resume from hibernate. The were likely loaded on
boot as well.

The scanner applications can be setup so that they do not load at boot.
Then, they should not load at resume either.
The basic drivers will load if they are loading now. The alternative is to
either unplug or uninstall the scanner if unplugging it does not help. There
is another option using for simplicity, msconfig to temporarily inhibit the
loading of the drivers. The scanner should be unplugged before you reboot,
or it might come up with new hardware found, etc.
