how2 make desktop wallpaper

Hey,
Pretty new user of XP here & have a 4mb.bmp. 1024x768
I'd like to use as desktop wallpaper. Stuck it in a webpage, right click
'Set as Background' and presto_chango. Now there's a file C:\Documents and
Settings\mike\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\Custom.theme 6 kb.

Is this a shortcut to the 4mb bitmap image which is where ? Or has
windows actually compressed it ?
I'd rather redo it after making it into a jpg to save the bytes if its still
floating around somewhere on the hdd as a big bmp.

Hi,

No, that's not it, that one holds any custom desktop settings you have made
(built your own theme, etc.). The file is usually copied to this folder:

C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper

no not there,,, but you gave me the hint searched wallpaper and found it
here
C:\Documents and Settings\mike\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp 4mb

Even if you designate a .jpg as wallpaper, Windows will make a .bmp copy to use for display, that's the file you found.

Made it into a 70% compressed jpg at about 50kb . Stuck it in
windows\web\wallpaper folder.
Zipped & send away all the other web\wallpaper files to LAN server for
storage. Made a wallpaper named ReadMe with it showing the original file
list, directions & where to find the originals if needed quickly.

Windows displays it now used as 2.4mb bmp so I saved a bit of hdd &
memory.

My Laptop, like to keep it thin and clean - its so small and 4200rpms makes
some things seem slow. Starts up well under 30sec right now and
surprisingly the new wallpaper paints and is up very much quicker than the
windows grassy hill/meadow Bliss.bmp ~1.5mb
