How view archived Contact data from an old Outlook backup?

I have done backups over the past year of my Outlook data file. I want to
find data that was previously in a Contact file. The trouble is when I open
an old Outlook data file and view the Archive folder list, only Calendar and
Tasks show up, not Contacts. If you want to back up the Contact file do you
always have to do it separately using "Export"? Have I lost all my old
Contact info because I never backed up my Contact file separately?

Archive works on mail not contacts, i.e. it removes mail e.g. when it past a
certain date, hence 'Archive'.
Contacts are assumed to have no time line and be permanent, unless you
specifically delete.
An Archive is not the same as a backup.
If you have 'lost' Contacts you must have deleted them, unless you started a
new pst
