How turn on CD autorun?

R

Rick Charnes

I recently got a new computer and I notice that CDs no longer autorun
when inserted into the drive. In the registry tree:

HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Cdrom

I see that 'Autorun' is set to 1. But I notice there's also a key
called 'AutoRunAlwaysDisable' whose value is:

NEC MBR-7 NEC MBR-7.4 PIONEER CHANGR D...

I'm not sure what that does. Any thoughts on how I can enable autorun?

You are safer leaving it off, especially if you use music CD's.

This is a long shot based on your registry being set okay. There may be a group
policy in force which can be changed. To verify do this:

Launch the Group Policy editor by clicking on Start > Run. Then type in
"gpedit.msc" w/o the quotes and click OK. Click and expand "Computer
Configuration", then navigate to "Administrative Template", followed by
"System". Check the status of "Disable Autoplay". If it's "Enabled",
double-click on "Disable Autoplay" and change setting to "Not Configured". Click
on Apply and "OK" and then close the editor. If the setting is already "Not
Configured", let well enough alone.

Thanks. Nah, it's 'Not configured'. I'll have to scratch my head and
play around with this more. Thanks much.

Right, thanks. If someone has CD autorun off, and they insert a music
CD and just double-click on AUTORUN.INF, does that open them up to
infection by rootkits?

One don't buy CD's from companies that pull that kind of stuff. And two,
just click on the music file itself.

If you're concerned about a rootkit infection, there are utilities available to
detect and remove them from your system. Here's one from Sophos:

Free rootkit detection and removal (v1.3 works well)

If you're receiving auto updates from Microsoft, their Malicious Software
Removal Tool has been able to detect and remove rootkits since 2005. See this
article for more info:
