How to use XP remote connection on home PCs

Remote Connection.doc

I am a web developer / Programmer with little knowledge of networking.
I have been able to connect to the local server from work or from home
using windows XP pro Remote connection. I would like to do this on HOME
computers on the internet, so I can fix friends PCs without leaving
home. What I have tried is to set up my PC and access it from another
without success. This is what I have done so far.

Boot up home PC (Windows XP pro). It has a few logons, one is
Administrator WITH a Password. In my Computer properties I have ticked
the bottom box to allow remote connection. I am not using a router. But
I have an AOL broadband with a desktop modem and the supplied filters.
I am using Norton internet security firewall. (maybe I should try
without it but that should not be necessary).

If it is a firewall problem with Norton? Is there a solution. OR do I
need to make other changes to my computes operating system.

Hi Desmond,

A WinXP Home system cannot serve as a Host for a remote connection, only as
a client. Meaning that you can be at a Home system and access a Pro system
using Remote Desktop, but not the other way around. The only solution to
this issue is a third party VPN product, of which there are many available.

Further to what Rick said:
WinVNC is such a product, and when operated in reverse
takeover mode it is nicely suited to support remote machines
while guaranteeing privacy.

Yes, not exactly clear what you mean by home computers, ie whether you mean
located at home or running xp home.

If you meant xp pro computers at home, then yes, configuring your
firewall(s) correctly to allow access, would be important, as well as
ensuring the relevant services are running ie not disabled.
