How to use Ghost Image?

HI everyone,

I am trying to use the ghost image to apply to 100 identical PC, how can I
do it? I know we can achieve this by using Norton Ghost, but how can we
change the Windows Serial number(Key) on each machine? Or do I have to get a
100 Volume license so they use the same key? What about if I want to join
them to the domain, do I have to do it manually after the ghost image is
applied to all 100 machines, is there any script that I can run so they can
join to the domain automatically during/after ghost image is applied? What
about the computer name, how can I change the computer name of each machine?
Is there any website which I can refer to ?

Thanks

It would be better solution than changing key for each machine.

Setup your first comp and make ghost image from it. Then restore image to
all other stations and change only comp name. (btw. I assume all comps have
same hardware)

If you have a site license, all 100 computers can have the same CD Key number.

I suggest Symantec Enterprise v8.x. Norton Ghost is the retail product. If you have 100+
computers you need the enterprise version (~$10.00 per PC)

The objective would be to install WinXP SP2 all Critical Updates and other updates and all
the user's standard software. Basically install the office standard "suite".

Configure all defaults for all the applications/utilities installed. This includes all
FireWall settings, IE and OE settings, Outlook 2002/XP/2003, etc., etc.

Copy the profile of the account used to install and configure the PC to the "Default User"
profile.

Create a sysprep.inf file and edit it to have the CD Key # and defaults. Execute Sysprep.

Create image on Enterprise Ghost server (it does not have to be a server platform, Win2K SP4
workstation works best). Then using the IP-multicast capability, restore the image to as
many destination computers as physically possible.

Note: Don't try to cross model platforms. That is restore say a Dell GX-240 image to a
Dell GX-400 platform. Restore a Dell GX-240 image to a Dell GX-240 platform.

When an image is completed on a destination platform it will run the Mini Setup Wizard and
at that point it would allow you to specify a unique PC name, a unique IP address and join
the Domain. You reboot the PC one more time and it is ready for an end user. When the end
user logs on they will inherit all default settings from the "Default User" profile.

Based upon my experiences in deploying platforms in an enterprise using Enterprise Ghost in
conjunction with Sysprep, using ONE CD Key with a site license is the easiest way to go.

HI,

Thank you very much for the replies. What about the outlook settings? will
the end user inherited the outlook settings, since every user uses different
username to connect to exchange server, althought, they might be using the
same exchange server.

Thanks

Roy

Yes. The end-user of an Exchange account will inherit the Default User settings. However
such things as using a Digitial Certificate to sign and/or encrypt email still has be done
on an individual basis.
