how to upgrade xpPro to larger drive

Windows XP Pro System with 40 gig hard drive. I want to replace the 40 gig
with a larger hard drive.
What is best way to move OS and all files from 40G to 160G hard. I would
prefer to not have to re-install everything.
thanks

Often there is basic image software that comes with a drive, or at least a URL to the downloadable image software from the manufacturer's website.

The new drive might come with copy software to copy the contents of the old
drive to the new. If it's a white box drive, then go to the drive
manufacturer's web site for the copy software. Read the directions on it
carefully. After making the copy but before booting with the new drive,
remove the old drive so the only thing the system sees on the first boot up
is the new drive.

An alternative is to purchase drive imaging software such as Acronis True
Image. You would then have it to make make images of the drive for backup
purposes.

How old is your machine?
Make sure your machine Bios recognizes a drive larger than 137 GB and that
you have XP SP 2.
