Should, but why not use the clone software to move the installation to
the new drive. Many replacement drives come with it, or visit the drive
manufacturers web site for a copy.

The mere swapping of a hard drive should not even set off Windows
Product Activation. All one has to do is to clone the old hard drive
on to the new hard drive. The cloning software may be supplied with
the new hard drive, if purchased as a retail (i.e., not "bare") one
or with third-party software, e.g., Acronis TrueImage, and even some
freeware products.

How one does the cloning is up to individual preference. The new
drive could be attached as a slave drive to the original hard drive,
with it being the master. We prefer to hook up the new drive to an
external USB or Firewire dock/adapter.

If everything but the drive remains the same, reactivation shouldn't
even be required, assuming that you don't reinstall Windows. Just use
the drive manufacturer's supplied program for copying the old drive to
the new one (or if you want to buy such a program, Acronis True Image
is a good choice).

If you do reinstall Windows, you will have to reactivate, but that
should not be a problem.

It is a desktop which was supplied by the OEM with XP Home SP1a and I have
updated it to SP3. (I do not want or need VISTA) 3.2 gig Intel 2 gig ram, I
am wanting to change the drive C: boot from 40 gig to 160 gig and replaceing
the drive D: which I keep all data on from 80 gig to 160 gig.

If you use imaging software to clone the XP drive to a new larger drive,
using a "manual" mode to enlarge partitions proportionally, you probably
won't have to activate at all.

Download the Acronis True Image trial, and install it on another system.
Attach both drives to that system - USB2 drive cases or adapters are great
for this - and you'll be done in probably an hour.
