How to troubleshoot a (sometimes) bad internet connection?

I have 3 Windows XP Pro pc's networked together and sharing a cable modem &
router. Several times in the past week, pc #1 would no longer connect to the
internet but the two were OK.

I checked the network setting, etc. and re-booted pc #1 several times and
suddenly my internet connection was restored.

The problem apparently is with pc #1 and not with either the cable modem nor
the router since the two other pc's were OK. My question is : what is the
best way to trouble this problem if/when it happens again?

TIA

Bad cable
Bad NIC
Setting on NIC sending it to sleep.
Something running on the PC screwing the connection

If it was me next time it happens I would:-

Go to a DOS prompt and type ipconfig /all

Ping the gateway and both DNS servers

Check for malware
