How to transfer files from Hardrive on old computer without CD wri

Is there some way I can use a USB cable from my old computer (HP PAVILION
running Win98) to be detected by my new computer (COMPAQ PRESARIO running
XPHome) in such a way that I can copy my Word files on the HP hardrive direct
to the hardrive of my new Compaq?

The old computer has no CD burner; and the new computer no 3.5" floppy.

Please reply to my email address at (e-mail address removed) - and thank you!

You ned a special USB file transfer cable.

You should consider looking for q cross-over Ethernet cable, if both PCs
have a network Ethernet 10/100/1000 adapter. You could set up a "small"
network between both, since most Ethernet drivers are usually already
installed.

Would it possible to remove the hard drive from your older computer. Then
install (temporarily) into the new computer.
If so, maybe you can hook it up using the IDE cable on the secondary IDE
channel on the new computer.
Unplug the CD drive if necessary to hook up the old drive.

Be sure the old hard drive jumper is set to agree with how you have it
cabled.
Master using connector at end of cable, or slave if using the connector in
the middle of the cable.
Cable Select is... well... cable select....

If mounting is an issue, set it somewhere REAL sturdy, close enough for the
cable to reach.
Find a wire (Radio Shack) that has an alligator clip on both ends. Use this
to ground the drive to the computer case.

(Be sure to ground yourself to the computer case before you touch anything
in the case).
(Touch the case with your hand, do this occasionally, especially if your
moving your feet around on carpet)

Boot into the BIOS (see your documentation), it might be the "ESC" or "F2"
key while booting.
Check to see if the BIOS sees the older drive and identifies it okay.

Exit and save the BIOS changes.
Boot into windows.
Copy your files over.
Shut down the PC and remove the older hard drive when your done.

If the older computer is no longer needed, donate it to your local
Highschool and get a tax receipt. For maybe $100.

But keep the old hard drive, leave it in your new computer and strip the
partition off it to clean it up real good and repartition/format it to your
liking.

Then you can keep all your personal files on the 2nd drive.

The next time you buy a new computer, you'll be a few steps ahead of the
game.

I've been through this several times... It's always worked well for me...
But Please... Be careful...

Hope some of this is useful to you!

Best regards,
