How to tell if AOL is installed

I just purchased a DELL computer with 6 months free AOL. After receiving
the replies to my previous post I'd be happy if AOL were not installed on my
computer.

I don't know if DELL installs AOL or includes the software that installs
AOL. If it's the latter I'd like to not install AOL. If it's already
installed I'd probably try it.

If I click the AOL icon I get a window that says it will "Help me setup
AOL..." I'm not sure if that means the software is installed and it's going
to setup tel number etc, or if it's going to install the software.

What are some of the signs of having AOL installed on a computer.

The sign you mentioned is the main one. AOL isn't really that terrible,
although, technically, it is not a "pure" ISP experience, but a content
provider. What is the most galling, for some, is that you can't really
"purge" your computer of every trace of AOL by uninstalling it. However,
the little traces it leaves behind do not have functionality, so why worry?

The software is already installed. The setup you refer to is to
actually sign-up with AOL, set screen name, Dial up # and
other account activation things. Usually AOL can be detected
by Icons for it being in every conceivable location, Desktop,
Start Menu, Quick Launch Bar.
Hopefully, Dell left an Uninstaller for AOL, AIM and Real
Audio components in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs.

This is a trick question, right? If your computer is acting like it has a
virus, then most likely, you have AOL installed.
